OU running back Gavin Sawchuk is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to SoonerScoop and On3 sources.

Sawchuk started his career at Oklahoma in 2022, totaling 977 yards and 11 touchdowns in three seasons with the Sooners. This news comes after OU added Cal running back Jaydn Ott in the portal. Sawchuk started 11 games in three years, including four last year.

Throughout his career in Norman, Sawchuk struggled with injuries, missing several games. Oklahoma’s running back has gotten crowded this offseason, with the addition of Ott and freshman Tory Blaylock. And with the emergence of Xavier Robinson last season and the additions of Ott and Blaylock, it makes sense that one of Oklahoma’s veteran running backs decided to depart.

“Seen a lot of really good things from them,” new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said during spring practice. “They’re dialed in on pass protection. Coach Murray he harps on pass protection with them, understanding where their eyes are supposed to be, who their certain pickup is. They’re dialed in on that. They’ve been able to run the ball downhill hard. We’ve done a lot of thud practices, so you don’t always get to see exactly, does the running back make ’em miss there? Ah, we think he did. Who knows. But they’ve shown up every day, and they’ve done some great things out of the backfield. They’ve done some great things inside the box in pass protection. Great group of kids.”

Sawchuk was a four-star running back from Valor Christian High School. He was a key contributor during the 2023 season, leading OU in rushing with 744 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, Sawchuk missed half the season due to injury, totaling only 128 yards and one touchdown.
