OU has hit in-state recruiting hard under head coach Brent Venables. That’s not new news by any means at this point.

He has made a concerted effort ever since taking over as head coach 25 months ago.

And sometimes, the best players aren’t exactly the best recruits. But you know a dawg when you see one. Oklahoma City Heritage Hall quarterback Andy Bass has been that guy for the Chargers for a long time.

Bass earned yet another honor being named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Oklahoma on Wednesday morning.

The 6-foot, 205-pound senior quarterback passed for 3,144 yards and 35 touchdowns this past season, leading the Chargers (14-1) to the Class 3A state title game. Bass threw only two interceptions, completed 66.3 percent of his passes and averaged 13.1 yards per attempt.

He also rushed for 1,480 yards at 10.7 yards per carry, finding the end zone 31 times. Bass helped lead Heritage Hall to a state championship in 2022 to go with the final last month.

Bass is a strong three-star prospect, and the Sooners are keeping him home. Bass will begin as a preferred walk-on at OU. A jack-of-all-trades, it appears as though Bass will begin his college career at running back and see where things go from there.

OU has loaded up on in-state talent for the 2024 class and is doing the same for the 2025 group. Even as a preferred walk-on, though, nobody is doubting Bass. Not for his shot at OU and definitely not for Bass earning the Gatorade honor.

Unfortunately, Bass tore his ACL and his meniscus in the championship game. He announced on Dec. 22 that his surgery went well. And he will be working his way back.

He is the first Heritage Hall player to earn the award since Wes Welker in 1999.
