OKLAHOMA CITY – OU softball has gotten the better of Texas time and time again. It’s not arrogance, but there is that feeling the Sooners will always figure it out.

Didn’t happen this time. A gutty and top-tier effort from Teagan Kavan has Texas one win away from the championship series.

The Sooners opened the door just enough for Texas to earn a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon in a winner’s bracket matchup in the Women’s College World Series at Devon Park.

OU absolutely battered Kavan during the regular season matchup at Love’s Field. And OU was able to get two runs off her in the initial two innings Saturday.

But Kavan settled in. And when OU needed Sam Landry to lock it down, the Longhorns were able to touch her up for solo home runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

OU mustered one last rally in the seventh. Ella Parker was hit by a pitch, and Nelly McEnroe-Marinas had a bloop single to have runners on first and second with one out.

Kavan bounced back by striking out Gabbie Garcia for the second out. And then Hannah Coor for the final strikeout on pitch No. 129.

Landry threw six innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. She walked two and struck out two in 106 pitches to fall to 24-5 this season.

OU trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the first for the second game in a row. Abby Dayton brought home a run on a single, and Kasidi Pickering had an RBI fielder’s choice.

It is Texas’ first win against OU in the state of Oklahoma since 2014.

Up next

OU has to come right back and play Oregon 6 p.m. Sunday. The Sooners took out the Ducks in the regional round in Norman last season. The Ducks won a 6-5 thriller in 10 innings against Ole Miss on Friday night. The winner of OU-Oregon would then have to win twice on Monday to advance to the championship series.
