Most of the midweek games for OU softball aren’t really about the competition. At least at this point. No, it’s about will anybody else show up for head coach Patty Gasso?

That’s not meant in a negative way. The Sooners are rolling, and one freshman after another is showing they’re up to the task. But there are more who want to be involved.

They’re all taking a backseat right now to Gabbie Garcia. She continued her stellar play in helping OU to an 8-0 run-rule (5 innings) victory against East Texas A&M on Wednesday night at Love’s Field.

Garcia was named Co-SEC Player of the Week and kept it going. Now with a 13-game hitting streak, no, Garcia didn’t go deep. However, she did add three more hits and drove in two runs.

On an incredibly windy night in Norman, OU wasn’t trying to play for the long ball. Hit it hard and play a little small ball. The Sooners did not have a home run. Again, not necessary.

What Gasso did deem necessary was giving some freshmen their time to shine in Chaney Helton, Corri Hicks and Tia Milloy.

There’s going to be a point when OU is going to need them in a clutch situation, and you know they want that chance.

The patience shown by OU continues to be emphasized. The Sooners drew seven walks in the inning-shortened contest. Ailana Agbayani also drove in two runs.

It was pitcher-by-committee Wednesday. Isabella Smith went two innings, then Kierston Deal for one to Paytn Monticelli for the final two. A five-inning no-hitter.

Up next

Just a brief one-game stop back at Love’s. Time to hit the road once again for OU (27-0, 6-0 SEC) to face Missouri. The Tigers are trying to rally after a rough initial month to their season. The three-game set begins Friday night in Columbia.
