OU softball earns the No. 2 overall national seed, road to OKC goes through Norman

The road for OU softball to return to Devon Park, well, it’s a familiar one. It’s going through Norman, going through Love’s Field.
OU has earned the No. 2 overall national seed following the Selection Sunday announcement and will play the rest of its games in the state of Oklahoma.
Joining OU in Norman this weekend? Boston University, Omaha and California. The Sooners start against Boston at 5 p.m. Friday.
Head coach Patty Gasso didn’t apologize about how she scheduled the non-conference portion. But it definitely made it tough for OU to become the top seed.
Gasso wanted to work in the fresh faces, both transfers and freshmen. It worked. The Sooners were able to get as much accomplished as possible before hitting the SEC.
OU went 17-7 during the SEC regular season, earning the championship. That included sweeps of South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Texas.
The Sooners and Texas A&M were on a collision course for the SEC Tournament championship game. However, Mother Nature got in the way. They even attempted to move the game up multiple hours to help. But nothing did, complete wash out.
The game was canceled and both squads were declared co-champions. It was no shock that A&M earned the top overall seed. Now the only way for the two to meet? Yep, in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The SEC was a different grind than what OU had ever experienced. But the Sooners kept coming and earned the honors.
Gasso was named the SEC Coach of the Year on Friday, while pitcher Sam Landry earned SEC Newcomer of the Year.
If the Selection Show felt like a love song to the SEC, it’s no surprise. The conference has 14 of its 15 teams in the field. The top four seeds were SEC (A&M, OU, Florida, Arkansas) and seven of the top eight are SEC (No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 8 South Carolina).
In total? The SEC had nine of the 16 national seeds. One of them could be a potential Super Regional opponent. No. 15 seed is Alabama, who would be paired up with OU. The Crimson Tide took two of three from the Sooners in Tuscaloosa earlier this season.
OU has never preached about winning its fifth straight national championship. That wasn’t the mantra – more about this team finding its identity.
Searching, tinkering, Gasso and staff have done all they can. It’s the postseason, here we go.
