OU softball loses second SEC series, downed 2-1 in extra innings at Alabama

Every week is a grind in SEC softball, and OU is learning that the hard way. It took one pitch in the bottom of the eighth for the Sooners to suffer their second straight defeat.
OU pitcher Sam Landry was as good as you could ask for seven innings. But Alabama star Audrey Vandagriff got Landry with the walk-off in the eighth for a 2-1 victory against the visiting Sooners on Monday night.
OU loses back-to-back games for the first time since Bedlam vs. Oklahoma State in May 2024. And OU has lost back-to-back series in the SEC and is 4-5 in league play since the 6-0 start.
The Sooners had their chance. Bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh. OU brought Kasidi Pickering and Gabbie Garcia to the plate. Can’t ask for much more.
Pickering grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Garcia did the same. Best threat of the evening, just couldn’t get that clutch hit.
Alabama led 1-0 before captain Nelly McEnroe-Marinas tied it with a solo shot in the fourth inning. But OU was off balance and struggled all series at the plate.
Landry went the distance, allowing seven hits. She didn’t walk one batter, struck out five in 96 pitches. Landry threw 14 innings against the Crimson Tide.
OU was feeling on a high after the Bedlam dominance Wednesday in Oklahoma City. But now it’s up to head coach Patty Gasso to get things going in SEC play again.
OU hosts Mississippi State this weekend. Friday night at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, followed by Love’s Field for Saturday and Sunday afternoon contests.

The Tide scored in four straight innings and just kept slowly stretching their lead. They were able to knock out starter Kierston Deal early and nobody really had the answer in the circle.
OU was limited to just one other hit that did extend Kasidi Pickering‘s hitting streak to 16 games. But that was it.
OU 5, Alabama 1 (Saturday)
Nobody could have predicted it would be sophomore Maya Bland to play hero for the second game in a row. It was, and it needed to be.
Bland hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to propel OU to the victory.
The Sooners trailed 1-0 entering the top of the seventh. Bland came up with one out and Gabbie Garcia on first base. Down in the count, Bland turned on one to take it over the right field wall.
OU plated three more runs and gave pitcher Sam Landry a little breathing room.
Landry didn’t need much help. As good as she was against OSU, she was even better in a great road environment in Tuscaloosa.
Landry went the distance, allowing just three hits with two walks and striking out six. She continues to show time and time again that she is up to the task of being the OU ace. Landry ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
