It is officially May, and OU and Florida let the softball world know what’s to come in the crazy 31 days ahead.

OU pitcher Sam Landry was able to get the final out with runners on first and second as the Sooners outlast the Gators, 6-5, in nine innings Thursday evening in Gainesville.

The win means the magic number is down to one for OU to clinch the regular season SEC championship. Texas A&M is the only other team in contention. The Aggies blanked No. 2 Tennessee 1-0 on Thursday.

OU had bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the ninth. Abby Dayton came through with her second RBI of the game, driving in the game-winning run with one out.

And Patty Gasso told Landry, go do it. The senior, who has been sensational all season, gutted out a nine-inning effort.

She didn’t have her best, walking a season-high five batters. She gave up a two-run homer in the sixth that erased a 5-3 advantage. And Landry threw 165 pitchers, per ESPN. The LIVE stats had Landry at 144. But all is well that ends well as Landry is now 18-3 this season.

OU got a lot of offense, just didn’t come through enough. The Sooners had 15 hits, including solo home runs by sophomores Kasidi Pickering and Ella Parker.

Five Sooners had at least two hits, led by Parker and her three-hit outing. The Sooners have now won seven straight SEC games. You would assume Kierston Deal will get the call Friday in the circle.

Up next

Let’s do it again on SEC Network. No. 1 OU (43-5 overall, 17-5 SEC) takes on Florida at 5 p.m. Friday. If OU wins or if A&M loses vs. the Vols, the Sooners will clinch their first SEC regular season championship.
