OU softball sophomore Sophia Nugent leaving the Sooners
OU softball sophomore Sophia Nugent announced Monday afternoon she is the second Sooner to hit the transfer portal.
Nugent hit .274 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs this season. But with catcher Kinzie Hansen set to return to Norman to use her COVID year of eligibility, it made things rough for Nugent.
“I have had a wonderful time in Norman, and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to play for the University of Oklahoma,” said Nugent in her announcement. “I am excited for what the future holds.”
Nugent did a fine job as a spot-duty catcher during the 2023 season, but she’s not likely to replace Hansen in the role.
She only had one game of multiple at bats from the Kansas series to the end of the season.
Head coach Patty Gasso was always quick to give credit to Nugent for being someone who was always ready. Whenever Gasso needed Nugent, Nugent answered the call.

Nugent’s biggest contribution for the Sooners during the postseason came when she laid down a sacrifice bunt against Florida State in the Women’s College World Series championship series.
Nugent had five games where she had at least three RBIs for OU this season.
Nugent joins sophomore star pitcher Jordy Bahl as players who are set to leave Norman. It was an incredible ride for the 2023 season, but we’re starting to learn what a toll it took.
The Sooners finished 61-1 overall, on a record 53-game winning streak and won their third straight national championship. But the sophomore, originally from California, is ready to see what else is out there after winning two of those titles.
