OU softball strikes early, Sam Landry does the rest

There are a lot of elements of a game where OU head coach Patty Gasso will really emphasize. Something she wants all the time? The quick start.

When OU gets ahead early, that becomes one heck of a tough uphill climb for the opponents. The Sooners were able to do just that Friday. And not surprisingly, a win came with it as well.

OU got back to its winning ways with a 4-0 victory against Mississippi State on Friday afternoon at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.

Gasso also talked about leaning on players who had been there before. Sophomore Ella Parker checks off that box. It was Parker who got everything going nice and early with a two-run double in the bottom of the first.

OU tacked on two more with a two-run home run by Hannah Coor in the bottom of the second. And as has been the case so many times this season, that’s more than enough for ace Sam Landry.

Landry has had her number called a bunch this season and certainly during the last couple of weeks. She simply keeps coming through.

Landry went the distance, a complete game in seven innings. She allowed just three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The key? She is not throwing that many pitches. Landry isn’t reaching that 110 or 120-pitch mark. Seven innings in just 85 pitches. Efficient and effective.

Landry is now 14-3 this season.

Abby Dayton was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored as OU was able to get the game in before the weather hit.
