First week in the SEC for OU softball, and the first weekly honor is checked off. Sophomore Ella Parker was named SEC Co-Player of the Week in helping the Sooners to a 6-0 start.

It was 6-0, but it was a hard-earned 6-0. OU needed to win two games in extra innings, including a 2-0 victory in 11 innings against Long Beach State on Sunday.

But when OU needed a big hit, it was usually Parker coming up with it. Parker hit 13-for-22 (.591 average) with 10 runs, five doubles, a home run, eight RBIs, three walks and three stolen bases.

It felt a little extra sweet for Parker that her lone long bomb happened in her hometown when OU took down Loyola Marymount on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Parker is expected to be one of the leaders for Patty Gasso and company. And maybe is already starting to separate herself as one of the best players in the country.

“I’m doing whatever it takes to help out my team,” said Parker before the season. “I think being able to learn from JT and all the coaches who have been really helpful. Just finding different ways to elevate my game. So just being able to do whatever it takes to pass a bat, do anything to help out my team.

“That past group was very special, and I was so grateful to be a part of that, and just being able to soak in everything like a sponge to them was really helpful. And just being able to transition back into this year has been really special to be a part of. And taking that and hopefully being able to pass that on to our newcomers this year.”

OU goes back on the road this weekend, but not nearly as far as Cali. The Sooners head to Waco, Texas, for the Getterman Classic. OU will play two games against Hofstra and Baylor on Saturday and Sunday.

Parker was selected alongside Auburn’s Nelia Peralta for the first weekly honor of the season.
