OU unveiling new throwback uniforms Sept. 7 vs. Houston
Ask OU fans, and one of their favorite throwback uniforms for the Sooners were the legacy ones used against North Texas to begin the 2003 season.
Here comes the 2024 version, with a nod to the past.
OU is going to feature a new throwback uniform during its Sept. 7 home game against Houston, which will kick off at 6:45 p.m. CT and air on the SEC Network.
As part of the 100th-year celebration of Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, each 2024 home game will feature a different theme. The Houston contest will spotlight the Bud Wilkinson era.
The immediate social media response has been incredible. OU fans have wanted another version like this and are going nuts for the unveiling Thursday morning.
Wilkinson coached the Sooners from 1947-63 and compiled a 145-29-4 (.826) record. The 1969 College Football Hall of Fame inductee led Oklahoma to 47 consecutive wins from the 1953 to 1957 seasons, still the longest streak in FBS history. Wilkinson, who compiled a 40-11 combined record against rivals Nebraska (14-3), Oklahoma State (17-0) and Texas (9-8), directed OU to its first three AP national championships in 1950, 1955 and 1956. The 1956 squad is often regarded as Wilkinson’s finest, and possibly the best in program history.

Replica versions of the Sooners’ alternate jerseys will be available at retail in both adult and youth sizes starting Thursday, Aug. 8. Fans can purchase jerseys in-store at The Sooner Shop, located at 1185 Asp Ave. in Norman (on the west side of Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium), and online at shop.soonersports.com.
Rough Riders retired
In another popular move, say bye bye to the Rough Riders. OU also announced it is retiring its “Rough Riders” alternate uniforms, which debuted in 2014 and featured a wood-grain design on the helmets and pants/jersey trim. The Sooners wore those uniforms at least once every season, and on multiple occasions most years.
OU’s anthracite-colored “Unity” alternate uniform is still in the program’s repertoire and is expected to be worn for a game in 2024, just like it was each of the past two seasons.
The season opener is 22 days away, with OU hosting Temple.
