Former OU basketball players Grant Sherfield and Tanner Groves will get an opportunity to keep their basketball careers going.

Sherfield has signed with the Phoenix Suns. Tanner Groves is staying close to his adopted home with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Catalyst Training founder Reid Ouse announced the news Friday afternoon, a day after the NBA Draft. It wasn’t a shock neither got drafted. It’s also not a shock both will get a chance in summer league to show what they can do.

Groves came to OU after three seasons at Eastern Washington and was the heart and soul of the OU program to usher in the Porter Moser era.

He averaged 10.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks last season.

“I’m just honestly feeling grateful. That’s really all that comes to mind. Just how grateful I am for the opportunity to get to play here, man,” said Groves in March. “It’s been an incredible experience, and, I mean, it’s going to be like some of the — like especially this year, we had some great wins. Just, you know, those are going to be memories that stick with me for the rest of my life. So I’ll forever be grateful for that.”

Sherfield found joy again at OU

Shefield arrived in Norman for one season after stops at Wichita State and Nevada. He led the team averaging 15.9 points per game with 3.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds.

Though OU didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, Sherfield said the year at OU was pivotal in him finding a love for the game again.

“It’s brought the joy back to the game for me, for sure,” said Sherfield in March. “Our young guys bringing fun back to the game for me. So I’m just grateful. I’m really happy to be part of this program. Yeah, I wouldn’t change anything.”

Groves and Sherfield were the only NBA Draft-eligible players from the Sooners roster.
