Patty Gasso statue unveiling set for Sept. 13

It’s almost five months later than when it was first scheduled, but OU head coach Patty Gasso is still going to get her day.

The Gasso statue unveiling will be 4 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 13), the OU athletic department said in a press release Thursday.

Gasso’s statue is the school’s first to honor a female coach or athlete.

The ceremony, which will be open to the public, will begin at 4 p.m. in front of Gate 1 at Love’s Field. The public viewing area will be standing room only immediately south of Gate 1, with a free livestream of the event available on SoonerSports.com. Public parking for the dedication is available in the Lloyd Noble Center lot.

Gasso, OU President Joseph Harroz Jr., athletic director Joe Castiglione, among others, and an OU will speak at the ceremony. Following the event, photo opportunities at the statue will be available to fans.

 The statue was created by master sculptor Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studio.

The ceremony was originally scheduled in April to coincide with spring football game weekend, but inclement weather delayed the honor.

Back-to-back-to-back-to-back

All Gasso and OU did after that point was win another national championship. Arguably the toughest of the four, the Sooners completed the 4-peat by taking down No. 1 Texas in the Women’s College World Series championship series.

OU has won eight national championships under Gasso, is the only NCAA softball program to win four consecutive national titles and is just one of three programs in NCAA history to win more than two national championships. Gasso has reached the Women’s College World Series 17 times during her tenure and has advanced to the postseason every season (no tournament was held in 2020).

With 34 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso owns a 1,676-411-3 (.802) career collegiate coaching record and is 1,515-352-2 (.811) at OU. She is the winningest active coach in NCAA history by both total wins and winning percentage and ranks third all-time in both categories.

The 2025 season sees OU going to the SEC and saying goodbye to so many familiar names like Jayda Coleman, Kinzie Hansen, Tiare Jennings, etc.

But it was a banner recruiting class. And Gasso, once again, checked off a lot of boxes when it came to the transfer portal.

And before you know it, fall ball and the Battle Series intrasquad competitions will be here once again.
