Patty Gasso vs. Jim Gasso a fun night for OU softball
When the OU fall softball schedule was released, everybody pointed toward Friday night. Head coach Patty Gasso (OU) vs. head coach Jim Gasso (MACU).
OU vs. Mid-America Christian in the Gasso Bowl. A fall ball record crowd of 2,763 in attendance on a beautiful night for softball.
And the duo clearly enjoyed the evening. Then it was time to work, and OU did just that. A 10-run fifth inning highlighted a 15-0 victory in the first five innings. It ended 17-0 in nine innings.
It was a combined perfect game between OU pitchers Audrey Lowry, Paytn Monticelli and Kierston Deal in the five innings.
Lowry went the initial three innings and struck out four. Monticelli struck out the side in her one frame. And then Deal added two more strikeouts in the fifth.
Deal finally allowed runners in the sixth, bases loaded and zero outs. However, the OU defense was able to keep MACU off the scoreboard with a fielder’s choice at the plate and then a diving double play to wrap up the frame.
Sam Landry closed out the show, throwing the final 2.2 innings. She allowed one hit, walked two and struck out six.

Gasso vs. Gasso
“It has not been fun at home. It’s been weird, just weird. We’d talk about it, then we don’t. Friends will call, and he’ll put it on speaker phone. And they’re like, ‘you can get them, Jim! This will be the greatest win.’ I’m like, really? So I’m like yelling on the other side, like ‘you’re dead to me’ to the friends on the other side of the phone. ‘I’m not talking to you.’ I think we were both a little bit nervous.
“But at the same time, what a glorious opportunity to have three Gassos in one game. I really was impressed with him. I know Jim Gasso as fiery, thinking he’s coming after the umpires. He’s going to try to bow up with me at home plate. He comes out as a lion? OK. He was quiet, but still coaching. I was watching him a lot without him knowing I was watching him. Had fun. I wanted to see if our team would work a little harder, like, OK, this means something to you, Coach Gasso. And they could care less.
“I hope we can do it again. I wouldn’t play – we played the Newlywed Game. It didn’t go very well. We’ve been married for 38 years, and we just don’t know much about – I thought his first job, that he was a bouncer. And he said he worked at a convenience store. When did you – you’ve never said that in 38 years, or 40 years. I learned a lot tonight about him and his team. It was fun. I enjoyed it. It was nervy, but it was really cool. It was really cool.”
