Pitcher Paytn Monticelli transferring to OU softball
It was only going to be a matter of time before OU softball started to make its moves in the transfer portal, and head coach Patty Gasso is ready to strike.
The first one came through Wednesday morning as former Wisconsin pitcher Paytn Monticelli announced her commitment to Oklahoma.
Monticelli took a visit to OU over the weekend, and Gasso let out her famous ‘Go Boomer’ tweet Monday afternoon. It had a lot of people wondering if Monticelli would be the first piece to OU’s portal haul.
As a true freshman, Monticelli went 7-4 last season with a 2.71 ERA. She gave up 31 earned runs in 80 innings with 21 walks and 82 strikeouts.
She threw at least 80 pitches in five separate appearances, topping out at 120 in a win vs. North Carolina in the first month of the season.
Everybody knew the Sooners needed to find at least one pitcher in the portal. Alex Storako, of course, had to move on because her eligibility was done. But, obviously, the big one was sophomore Jordy Bahl leaving the program after winning back-to-back championships.

Bahl chose to go back home to Nebraska, opening the door for Monticelli to decide to come to Norman. Monticelli is actually the opposite. A native of Wisconsin, this was a chance for her to leave home and see what else she can do.
Monticelli hit the portal June 19, and she is also a member of the Great Britain Senior Women’s National Team.
OU has lost three players via the portal (Bahl, Sophia Nugent and Jocelyn Erickson), but nobody is hitting the panic button at all for the Sooners.
Funny enough, just minutes before Monticelli announced her commitment, Gasso said, ‘Go Boomer’ one more time. The first piece, now, is officially in.
