Projecting the Oklahoma depth chart
The 2023 season is quickly approaching and Oklahoma will soon have its depth chart.
With an influx of transfers and an impressive freshman class, the two-deep depth chart could look vastly different in coach Brent Venables’ second season. SoonerScoop’s George Stoia took a guess at the Oklahoma depth chart below.
Oklahoma offense
Several starting jobs are up for grabs this season, especially at skill positions. Oklahoma lost two of its biggest playmakers from last season in running back Eric Gray and wide receiver Marvin Mims. Sophomore Jovantae Barnes and redshirt freshman Gavin Sawchuk will battle at running back. While there’s a long list of receivers fighting to contribute, with junior Jalil Farooq and senior Drake Stoops returning. The offensive line also has some gaps and while they have a few returning starters, the interior offensive line could shake out several ways.

Oklahoma defense
The Oklahoma defense welcomes a handful of new faces from the transfer portal. The defensive line could look totally different from last season, both in the middle and on the edge. There’s a real chance Wake Forest transfer Rondell Bothroyd and Tennessee transfer Da’Jon Terry start Week 1. At linebacker, junior Danny Stutsman is a shoo-in to start, but who will start next to him? There are several contenders. The secondary has position battles everywhere, with senior corner Woodi Washington and junior safety Billy Bowman the only ones with their spots on lock. And the cheetah position will likely come down to Indiana transfer Dasan McCullough and veteran Justin Harrington.
Here’s Stoia’s projection of the defensive two-deep:
- DE: Rondell Bothroyd / R Mason Thomas
- DE: Ethan Downs / Trace Ford
- DT: Jordan Kelley / Da’Jon Terry
- DT: Isaiah Coe / Davon Sears
- LB: Danny Stutsman / Konnor Near
- LB: Jaren Kanak / Kobie McKinzie
- Cheetah: Dasan McCullough / Justin Harrington
- CB: Woodi Washington / Kendel Dolby
- CB: Gentry Williams / Jasiah Wagoner
- S: Billy Bowman / Key Lawrence
- S: Reggie Pearson / Peyton Bowen
Oklahoma special teams
Redshirt junior kicker Zach Schmit is expected to continue with kickoffs and field goals. But Oklahoma does need to replace Michael Turk at punter. That’s a three-way battle between three transfers – Central Michigan’s Luke Elzinga, Arizona State’s Josh Plaster, and Colorado’s Ashton Logan. At kickoff return, last year’s returners are back in Bowman and Farooq. But will someone else take over? And at punt return, Oklahoma has to replace Mims. The sure-handed Stoops feels like the obvious choice.
Here’s Stoia’s projection for the special teams two-deep:
- K: Zach Schmit / Gavin Marshall
- P: Luke Elzinga / Josh Plaster
- KR: Billy Bowman / Jalil Farooq
- PR: Drake Stoops / LV Bunkley-Shelton
