Quarterback Casey Thompson commits to OU
OU has landed a quarterback in the transfer portal, and it’s a familiar name in Casey Thompson.
Oklahoma will be Thompson’s fourth school in seven years of playing college football. He started his career at Texas (2018-2021) before transferring to Nebraska (2022) and Florida Atlantic (2023). He tore his ACL in just his third game this past season at Florida Atlantic, giving him an extra year of eligibility.
He’s played in 33 career games during his career, totaling 5,338 yards, 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Thompson started 10 games for Nebraska in 2022, throwing for 2,407 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He has started against Oklahoma twice. Once with Texas in 2021 and again with Nebraska in 2022, losing both games. He joins wide receiver Brenen Thompson as the second player on OU’s roster to have formerly played for Texas.
An Oklahoma City native, Thompson was originally recruited by Oklahoma out of Newcastle High School where he was a four-star recruit. He is the son of former OU quarterback Charles Thompson (1986-88) and brother of former OU quarterback Kendal Thompson (2014).
He joins an OU quarterback room that is young and talented, but not experienced. Soon-to-be sophomore Jackson Arnold will be the starter for the Sooners in 2024. But it’s unclear who will be the backup with true freshmen Michael Hawkins Jr. and Brendan Zurburgg both expected to compete for the job. Now with Thompson in the mix, OU has an experienced and capable backup quarterback.
Thompson is the 12th commitment from the transfer portal for the Sooners.
