Report: Deion Burks not expected to play vs Texas
It appears OU will be without one of its top weapons against Texas on Saturday in wide receiver Deion Burks.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Purdue transfer is not expected to play at the Cotton Bowl. Burks suffered a “soft tissue” injury against Tennessee and did not play against Auburn. He also has not practiced since his injury. On Wednesday, Burks was listed as “questionable” on the SEC availability report. On Monday, during his coach’s show, coach Brent Venables said that they were still evaluating Burks.
“I feel good, from a receiver standpoint, that we’ll have some guys back in a few weeks,” Venables said. “We’ll see where Burks is here in the next couple of days.”
With Burks out, Oklahoma will be without its top five receivers against the No. 1 Longhorns. Jayden Gibson, Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson and Andrel Anthony are also all out, and have been out for some time. Gibson is the only one that’s known to be lost for the season, while Venables is hopeful the others will return at some point this season. That timetable is unclear.

“Jalil’s right there at six weeks now or close that,” Venables said. “He’ll be out of his boot in a couple of days and start getting back in shape and things like that. So, we’ll get a couple of those guys back, pending there’s no setbacks along the way.
“Andrel had another little cleanup surgery and feels really, really good. Had that here sometime recently and he feels really good. So we’ll see where that is here in a few weeks, as well. And then we had some other guys that have just been banged up that have been kind of fighting through it, so that helped these guys… Just your normal bumps and bruises.”
