Everybody is still adjusting to just who this team is for OU softball. But the Battle Series is giving everybody a good idea of what you might expect from the 2025 crop of Sooners.

It’s time for some speed. It’s something that head coach Patty Gasso is fired up about, and rightfully so. The Sooners can still go deep, but they’ve got some speed.

The second edition of the Battle Series saw Team Sooner take down Team Boomer 13-5 on Wednesday night at Love’s Field.

OU returns to action next Wednesday for a scrimmage at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Highlights

*Transfer pitcher Sam Landry threw four scoreless innings. She allowed three hits with zero walks and three strikeouts.

“For tonight, I was really pleased with it,” Landry said. “Really pleased with the team. It’s hard for a pitcher to have a good night when they’re defense isn’t there to back them up. That goes down to Cheney’s diving catch in right field, Ailana making the three ground ball plays in the first inning. I thought the team looked really good and as a person of that team, that just makes you happy.”

*Freshman Tia Milloy is fast. Like really fast. She showed that speed multiple times Wednesday. Milloy had four hits, an RBI, stole a base and routinely pressured the defense when on base.

*Really nice night for transfer catcher Isabela Emerling. She went 3-for-4 hitting with a home run and two RBIs. Gasso was very pleased with Emerling’s effort behind the plate defensively.

*Other home runs? Ella Parker had a three-run shot as part of her four-RBI evening. Cydney Sanders hit one of the longest home runs at Love’s Field, blasting a two-run shot. Kasidi Pickering also had a two-run home run.

Opening statement from head coach Patty Gasso:

“I think the first thing we talked about is just making sure we come out — we want everyone, any fans that are watching to say ‘Wow, they look so much better than they did the first (game). I thought we did a good job with that, our pitching did not. Our pitching, Sam did a good job. We had some hiccups along the way. Wanted to get Ella an opportunity to get on the mound and Ailana (Agbayani) on the mound because it’s just kind of tricky when you can pull them right off the infield. Last year, Ailana did that to us when she was at BYU and she was very uncomfortable to deal with so we’re really trying to create an interesting dynamic with our pitching staff.”

“And Bella Smith is still on hold, she can’t get out with us. She’s practicing with us but not in-game, so I really loving our defense. There were times when we had … Were a little bit sloppy. Our speed is incredible and that’s what’s really fun about this. This is gonna look entirely different from what you all have seen before, and that’s good. We’re not trying to be the last four years. This is a completely new team with just a different look about them and I’m excited. I’m going to have to really learn how to coach this style. I’ve had it before but it’s been a long time. The last 10 years, we just have big bombers. They come up and we have a good balance of that right now, so I’m having a lot of fun with these guys.”
