The good start for the Sooners basketball team is almost officially out the window. January has been a wake-up call, a return to reality for Porter Moser and company.

And the reality right now? OU has a lot to figure out in a short period of time. The Sooners fell apart in the second half and dropped a 72-62 contest to host Georgia on Saturday evening.

After a 13-0 start, the Sooners are 13-3 and 0-3 in the SEC.

OU led 36-33 at halftime but was unable to respond after UGA punched back in the second half. And it’s officially danger zone time with freshman Jeremiah Fears.

He was sensational in the non-conference, one of the best stories of the season. But he has not been the same in the SEC.

Fears has scored two points or less in the first half of every single SEC game. Instead of a bounce back in the second half, though, Fears had no answer.

Fears finished with two points on 1-for-11 shooting. He also had five assists and four turnovers.

Game No. 16 OU Takeaways

*Jalon Moore led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. But even Moore had an incredibly rough stretch.

Moore didn’t score in the first 16 minutes of the second half. By the time he started to get going and assert himself, the hold had been dug.

*Kobe Elvis and Duke Miles tried to keep OU afloat all evening. Both had 14 points, both looked engaged and had some really nice moments. It’s tough to ask transfers to be the voice, but they have the experience to command that type of presence.

*More Mo Wague, period. SEC play has seen Wague wake up. His best all-around game, no doubt. Wague had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals.

If Wague can stay out of foul trouble, he has to be the guy off the bench for the bigs. He’s the best inside defender OU has.

Up next

The Sooners need a win. Well, Texas needs a win. The Sooners and Longhorns are a combined 0-6 in the SEC. It’s a White Out event at Lloyd Noble Center, but it’s a bizarre 9 p.m. tip Wednesday night. OU has two home games next week vs. winless Texas and winless South Carolina. Gotta get on track, period.
