It’s January so that means OU fans start turning the page from football to basketball. And if you haven’t watched Porter Moser and company just yet, well, welcome.

The Sooners are 12-1 in the first two months of the season. Ranked No. 11 in the AP poll and No. 28 in the NET rankings.

It was a much better than expected initial months of the season. But now? The real fun begins. The Big 12 grind is here once again for OU.

SoonerScoop’s Eddie Radosevich and Bob Przybylo break down everything you need to know in this week’s SoonerHoop.com report.

Best win

Leaning toward Providence. And that has been the issue. Some of the wins a lot of OU fans were fired up about in November and December haven’t really panned out. The four big-boy wins are from teams ranked No. 60 or higher in the NET rankings. Still, the Sooners took care of business against legitimate Power Five schools that probably wouldn’t have happened last season. OU, however, is one of four teams in the NET top 30 without a Quadrant 1 victory.

Biggest surprise

Let’s go with Javian McCollum. Tip of the hat to Otega Oweh and his improved offensive game for OU. And there is no better offensive rebounder in college basketball than Sam Godwin. But McCollum has been every bit as fast as advertised. McCollum and Milos Uzan still seem to have some off moments working together. When they’re on, though? It’s something beautiful to watch. McCollum is someone who has shown he’s not afraid of the big moment.

Sizing up the Big 12

Well, here it comes again. Look at the NET. No. 1 Houston, No. 2 BYU, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 11 Kansas. Nothing has changed with this league. It’s only better by adding the likes of the Cougars (Houston and BYU). Holding serve at home is going to be paramount the next two months because trying to earn any road victory is going to be one tough chore. At No. 28, OU is sixth in the Big 12. Buckle up.

Up next

OU has a big one out the gate. The Sooners welcome Iowa State to Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday. The Cyclones also don’t have a Quadrant 1 victory but are ranked No. 8 in the NET. ISU is riding a six-game winning streak to Norman, having not lost a game in December. As pivotal as it gets with OU at TCU and Kansas next week. Crucial to start out 1-0.
