Sooners Flip Big 10 Commit Brendan Zurbrugg
On Tuesday afternoon in the most unfamiliar of Oklahoma recruiting hotbeds Jeff Lebby got something he’s been chasing for a while – another quarterback for 2024 class. That new Sooners pledge is Alliance, Ohio three-star signal caller Brendan Zurbrugg. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback flipped his commitment from Northwestern to Oklahoma just moments ago.
Lebby and the Oklahoma staff landed Zurbrugg after a visit to Norman for the Party at the Palace last weekend. From that point forward he knew it would be tough to say ‘no’ to the Sooners.
“I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to play for Oklahoma,” Zurbrugg said. “One of the most important things was getting to know the coaching staff. The competitiveness and will to win while also caring about their players is extraordinary. The coaching staff is as good as it gets, they are great coaches and great people.
“Also the football culture and success in the program is something I want to be apart of, joining the best conference in the world and playing at the highest level.”
Zurbrugg Gets More Familiar with Sooners Staff
Zurbrugg didn’t get a chance to be around the Sooners head coach as Brent Venables was in New Orleans to be with his wife, Julie, as he detailed to the media on Tuesday. The Sooners coach hasn’t missed the opportunity to get to know his latest commitment.
“He wasn’t there but I’ve been on FaceTime with him a few times. He’s a great guy and a great coach and all those championships and bowl wins he has proves it,” he said.
But he did get to be around Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
“Coach Lebby, talking to him I could see why he’s so good at what he does and how quarterbacks love playing for him. He knows the position is competitive and challenging but also that I’ll enjoy being a quarterback in his room,” he explained.

“We watched a little film but mostly looked at the quarterback calendar. We were trying to see what my schedule would be like – throws per week, installs, that kind of thing.”
During his trip to Norman he had a chance to be around fellow 2024 quarterback commitment Michael Hawkins. While the two got along well, according to Zurbrugg, he says competition is just a reality of playing at a place like Oklahoma.
“Oklahoma always has good quarterbacks and it will be very competitive but it will also fun to be able to play with them,” he explained.
As for what he plans to accomplish in Norman? Zurbrugg is pretty comfortable with what he has planned.
“My goals are to become the starter and win a championship.”
