The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2023 Oklahoma football season. It’s the second season under head coach Brent Venables and expectations are high once again. The Sooners are looking to rebound from the uncharacteristic 6-7 season in 2022.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 10 Jackson Arnold

2022 Stats: N/A

2023 outlook: There’s no denying that Arnold is probably the most watched player on the Sooners roster who isn’t really even competing for a starting role. The five-star quarterback has made a big impression almost from the moment he arrived in Norman. And those impressions were rewarded when he was put in for the final drive of the spring game against Oklahoma’s first-team defense. A drive that he led down the field for a touchdown before a dropped two-point conversion killed the chance for a win in the game.

“We’ve been going against good-on-good all spring, so we wanted to change it up for the spring game, obviously, knowing that is going to be tougher on that group,” Sooners head coach Brent Venables said at the time of putting Arnold on the field. “Wanted to see how those guys would handle it. Every position, him included.”

Arnold enjoyed the opportunity and has been continuing to build momentum through the spring and summer.

“He’s, really, exceeded expectations,” Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby said. “At some point, that young man is going to be the face of our program, and everybody in this room and Sooner Nation is going to be dang proud of him.”

Arnold will be behind Dillon Gabriel for much of 2023 but the Sooners will find ways to get him on the field as often as possible. Even with some packages to get him on the field during games still ‘in doubt’.

2023 Quarterback Outlook

Gabriel will lead the quarterbacks in 2023, returning as a four-year starter at UCF (2019-2021) and OU (2022). But the quarterback room is deeper this season with the addition of Arnold. A former five-star recruit, Arnold has high expectations, but he’ll have to wait his turn behind Gabriel. Redshirt junior Davis Beville and redshirt sophomore General Booty round out the room, both returning from last season. Lebby has done a nice job rebuilding the Sooners’ quarterback room in first two seasons in Norman.
