The Sooner Scoop – April 25, 2025

Attention Ladies and Gentleman, I have an urgent and breaking Sooners news story!

One of the fastest rising names in college football this week is Hopewell, Va. defensive lineman T-Ron Richardson. And the Sooners took note of him this week, evidently while watching tape. This week Richardson has picked up offers from not only the Sooners but Auburn, Syracuse, and Marshall along with setting up an official visit to Virginia Tech on June 20.

The Sooners could have waited for their on campus visit but felt they needed to throw their hat in the ring.

“They haven’t been here yet, they’ll be down to see me this week, more than likely,” Richardson explained.

Oklahoma has often made offers in Virginia and has, occasionally, had success so the idea that he’d have some familiarity with the Sooners makes sense. But what he references as the things he knows about Oklahoma, is interesting.

“Oklahoma Is known for their engineering and business programs,” Richardson said.

We’ll see where things move with him but the Sooners seem in early enough that things could happen here.

Hall Continues Laying Groundwork with Big-Time Safety

Few players have shown more early interest in the Sooners in the 2027 class than Waco (Texas) University safety Davontrae Kirkland. Oklahoma returned that interest this week when safeties coach Brandon Hall got by to see the Trojans star.

“He stopped by the school to see me, we had a great conversation,” Kirkland said.

Kirkland remains very high on the Sooners and his relationship with Hall is fundamental to that chance.

“He talked about how hard they are recruiting me and that they want me to come back down to the campus before the season starts. He said he came down just to check in on me and to let me know that are wanting me to be a part of the family,” he recalled.

There’s, obviously, a long road before his decision is to come but the Sooners are making the right moves.

Sooners to Make a Run in Rare Region?

Oklahoma has been as national in their recruiting over the last decade as just about any program in the country but one area they’ve never quite cracked is the Northeast. There have been a few wins east of Ohio and North of the DMV but largely it’s been a tough road.

This week the Sooners made an offer in that Northeast region to EDGE Reston Lehman of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Peters Township. Lehman isn’t one who has had a lot to say about his recruitment but obviously with the Sooners involved in the Keystone State the automatic concern goes to Penn State.

However, in talking to some sources it sounds like the Nittany Lions are unlikely to be a large impediment for the Sooners. In fact it seems unlikely that he’ll even take an official visit to State College.

That’s not to say it’s a free run but the in-state pull won’t exactly be the problem that the Sooners often have to face in recruiting nationally.

We need to see where things go and just how hard Oklahoma elects to push for him but should they make a real run it seems like a chance could develop.

Dreiling Scouring the Country for Sooners Linebackers

One area where the Sooners hadn’t been as active in the last few years but seem to have some renewed interest as of late? St. Louis. The Sooners made a pair of offers in The Gateway to the West this week including one to 2026 linebacker Mason Marden of Ladue Horton Watkins.

The big linebacker played host to Nate Dreiling this week and while picking up an offer the two connected according to Marden.

“Coach Dreiling came by and spoke to me for a while,” Marden said. “I feel he will have a good intensity because he is more personable and was easy to talk to and get to know.”

Now he and the Sooners are working on future plans.

“He gave me an offer and we are currently talking about getting down for an official visit date,” he said.

The three-star linebacker, and Missouri’s No. 12 prospect, is, clearly, still getting to know Dreiling – as are Sooner fans themselves, but Marden sees a chance for the two to work well together.

“I haven’t had a chance to see him coach up close but as I continue to build the relationship with him I feel he is very genuine throughout my conversations with him.”
