SPRING, Texas – Just last year the Sooners reeled in one of Texas’s elite defensive backs from Spring (Texas) Klein Oak. And early returns on Courtland Guillory are strong but the Sooners already knew they’d be pushing to find more talent from the Panthers after offering Oak star running back Micah Rhodes last summer.

Rhodes was at last Sunday’s Under Armour camp in North Houston and was excited about the opportunity to compete against some elite Lone Star talent.

“Just being able to play with the top guys, coming out here and competing with the top guys in the camps,” Rhodes said of the rewards of a camp environment.

“My guy CJ (Chizer), also a class of 2028 running back, he won the MVP, definitely proud of him.”

Sooners Impressing Rhodes Early

Rhodes was in Norman again this spring to watch a spring practice. While there he also got some time around the players as well as sitting in on a position meeting.

“It was great, all the running backs went in a meeting with coach Demarco (Murray). I got to see how they do things and I liked how they do that,” he said.

That bond with Murray is something that Rhodes has been building since last June. And in that time they’ve developed a connection that goes beyond football according to Rhodes.

“[He’s’ kind of like a mentor, you can call him for anything. You ever need anything, need help, with football or without he can be that,” he said.

His other clear connection to the Sooners is the afore-mentioned Guillory and the young Sooners corner is sending back strong reviews from Norman.

“I talked to him maybe like two weeks ago and he says he loves it up there. He’s working hard and I can’t wait to see him play. He looks good from the clips I’ve seen,” Rhodes said of his former teammate.

“I’m definitely going to be working to take some visits out there.”

A Top Three Emerges for Rhodes

It’s, obviously, incredibly early for the class of 2028 running back but Rhodes says three programs have made an early impression. And as he heads into his first spring practices as a high school student he says they each offer something different.

“Most definitely A&M, OU, and Baylor are the ones really trying hard to recruit them,” he explained.

“It’s different relationships with all three of them. It’s something I love and all three are different.”
