On Thursday evening news broke that Oklahoma lost the commitment of Denton (Texas) Guyer quarterback Kevin Sperry. For some it was news that had been rumored since the summer. Sperry, who had been committed to the Sooners for more than 18 months, had been connected with Texas A&M and several others over the last six months.

With the rumors swirling most believed the Sooners had been laying some groundwork to land their 2025 quarterback if Sperry were to defect. When his pledge to Florida State became public on Thursday there was immediate conversation of Oklahoma pursuing one prospect in particular.

That player? In-state star Jamarian Ficklin of Muskogee.

A lot of that conversation stemmed from Oklahoma connecting with Ficklin repeatedly as of late. In fact the Sooners hosted him for the Maine game and as of 24 hours ago were expected to host him for this weekend’s SEC tilt with Alabama. So now with the decommitment of Sperry it would seem all is lining up for Oklahoma and Ficklin, right?

Maybe not.

“They called me yesterday and told me they weren’t moving forward with me,” Ficklin said of a Wednesday conversation with the Sooners.

Wait, what?

It seems that the Sooners let him know on Wednesday that he wasn’t part of their current plans. But somewhat surprising new for Ficklin was buoyed by the news of an offer from Utah, where he’ll visit this weekend.

That being said, Ficklin doesn’t seem quite sure where things stand with the Sooners now that they are quarterback-less in the 2025 class.

“But yesterday they didn’t know Sperry would flip,” he mused.

So is his impression that Oklahoma might change their plan just 24 hours later?

“I don’t know (right) now.”
