SUGAR LAND, Texas – On Friday night Max Granville was crowed a prince at Ft. Bend Christian Academy. Before and after his coronation he was busy helping his Eagles crush John Paul XXIII 52-0. On the night he had a sack and a tackle for loss, a performance we talked plenty about.
Max Granville More than Just a Football Star
Granville was nominated, and won, as a junior prince in his school’s homecoming ceremony during half-time of the lopsided win. But the Sooners offer also had teachers seeking out this reporter to talk to him about the kind of person Granville is.
“I have him in class and everything you see from him, it’s the real thing. He just does everything you ask of him and he deserves everything coming to him,” Ft. Bend Christian Academy director of fine arts Robert Sanders said before the game.
What does Granville think of that kind of praise?
“I love Jesus and try to live my life according to the bible. [I’m always] trying to be a good student, just try and be a light. Once you get to know I’m personable, friendly,” Granville said.
And according to the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Granville, he owes a lot of his success to his father, Billy. The two talk about Max’s recruitment frequently but the younger Granville is appreciative of all that his father has done.
“He talks a lot about it but I really appreciate him. I love him. I know he probably doesn’t feel that way because I keep it to myself,” he said.
“As you say, he played the game, he has a lot of knowledge. he’s helped me so much. He’s been training me since I was little. I appreciate the input he’s been giving me, I know he wants the best for me.”
Sooners Keep Working on Granville
Just last month Sooners defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis made his way to Sugar Land to see the skilled pass rusher. The two have built a strong early connection.

“I like (Chavis). That’s my guy. We’ve got a good relationship, I’ve been on campus a few times. I’d say we’ve talked more in person than on the phone because he gets busy,” Granville explained.
He’s hopeful of getting up to a game but admits it may not be possible to make a trip to Norman before the end of the year. Still though, the Sooners have throw out one big name from Brent Venables‘s history to offer Granville a look into the future they have planned for him.
“They want me on the edge, as a defensive end. R Mason Thomas, they throw that name around a lot,” he recalled. “He coached Vic Beasley at Clemson so something like that. It seems like I’m not going to be playing in the middle a lot, mostly on the edge.”
Though Granville, who along with the Sooners is being heavily pursued by Texas A&M, Tennessee, Alabama, and LSU amongst others, he says he won’t waste time with a decision if he knows what he wants.
“It could be sooner, it depends on if I’m really feeling a school. I don’t see the point of waiting it out. I don’t really know.”
