When the OU schedule was released, this was supposed to be the take a deep breath and get ready for the stretch run weekend.

Nobody is expecting Maine to be competitive, but the outlook of post-Maine is a lot different. Because maybe you have one eye on 2024, but a lot of attention is going toward 2025.

With good reason, too. Not much can be fixed about this season at this juncture. OU is who it is. All Brent Venables can preach is the fight and incremental improvement.

That’s where we’re at as November rolls around. It’s time for another edition of the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop.

Let’s not act like there’s anything else out there. Time to talk OU offense.

Offensive future?

Unanswered questions across the board. Starting, obviously, with offensive coordinator. How much is OU really willing to pay to make the right hire? Does the hire change the direction of things with Jackson Arnold?

From there, you’d have to look at position coaches. And from there, breaking it down more, you’d wonder about offensive line.

Beginning this week, you’ll be wondering about the freshmen offensive line. Will any of those guys get a crack at the Black Bears?

Venables has been pro-Bill Bedenbaugh during the last couple of press conferences. So maybe Bedenbaugh has one more run in him?

To redshirt or not to redshirt?

It’s time, right? Time to let some of these freshmen show up, show out and show who they can be. Looking at you, tight end Davon Mitchell.

The spark doesn’t just have to be from the offensive coordinator spot. It could be opening the door for someone like Mitchell to try to make a move.

Same with defensive players. This is the week to see them on the field to learn whether they can be a factor the rest of the way.

All that and all the banter you’ve come to expect from the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop.
