OU Brent Venables
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables talks with Oklahoma Sooners defensive lineman Damonic Williams (52) after a penalty during the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024. Texas one 34-3.

Nobody saw this as the narrative of OU football heading into the second half of the season. But here we are. All eyes are on the offense. All eyes are on whether Brent Venables and company can get it fixed the rest of the way.

The OU defense has been solid, borderline great. Special teams has done its part. But the offense has been lacking in a historical manner.

It can’t get any worse, can it?

Time to recap what was and look at what could be with the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop. It is a tense, tense week in Norman with South Carolina coming in for homecoming.

The offensive fix is here?

You have to start there. Michael Hawkins Jr. is still the guy, per Venables. Jackson Arnold is waiting for his shot. We don’t know if OU will get any receivers back to make their lives easier.

The offensive effort was, well, offensive in the loss to Texas. The fans, nobody can tolerate a second week of a showing like that.

What can be done in such a quick period of time? Is it the playcalling? Scheme? Or the personnel running it all? No matter how you slice it, it’s not good.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, promise. Guys like cornerback Eli Bowen are showing there are even more defensive stars in the making for the Sooners.

However, defense shouldn’t be the issue vs. South Carolina. Can the offense get 20 points?

Fodje rising up

A big storyline will be whether OU can keep that 2025 recruiting class. Recruiting editor Josh McCuistion returns from seeing Ryan Fodje last week.

The Sooners are also bringing in a couple of big names for a visit this weekend. Still trying to piece together those final slots for the class.
