That’s not the story OU wanted to tell to wrap up the 2023 season. But not all stories have that feel-good happy ending.

The Sooners did a lot of it to themselves, though. Oklahoma committed six turnovers en route to a 38-24 loss to Arizona in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Arnold accounted for four of those giveaways in his first OU start.

“Really proud of our football team, and I’m so thankful for all of you guys up here,” said head coach Brent Venables after the game. “Just, again, the guts, the fight, the belief, the commitment, your body of work, the young men that you are. Just amazing people, fantastic football players but amazing people.

“Got everything that we could out of this group of guys, and you guys have led the way. We squeezed all the juice out of it we could squeeze.

“I just want to say how thankful I am for all of our players and these guys as leaders of the team. I’m disappointed for them that we couldn’t do a few things a little better to have a chance to win, and we certainly had a heck of a game and came out on the wrong end of it, but doesn’t take away, again, how amazing these guys are, the type of team that I believe — the season that we had.”

It’s time for the Eskridge Lexus Postgame podcast from SoonerScoop with Carey Murdock, Eddie Radosevich and George Stoia. LIVE from San Antonio.

Summary:

The Sooners fall to Arizona 38-24 in a game that was as ridiculous as it was interesting. The Sooners committed 6 turnovers in the game. Three of those were interceptions by freshman phenom Jackson Arnold. So what happened? And what does this mean for this team moving forward? Where are the biggest issues on this team headed to 2024 and what can be fixed the most? Carey, Eddie and George convene for the last time from San Antonio to break it all down from the final stop of the 2023 football season. George is a little miffed about postgame media access as well.
