SoonerScoop Sights & Sounds: OU 73-0
OU began its season with a 73-0 shellacking of Arkansas State. SoonerScoop was there to experience it all – before, during and after the game.
Sights & Sounds – Week 1
Opening statement from head coach Brent Venables following the victory.
“Both sides of the ball really complemented each other well. Gavin with his return, the longest return we’ve had in seven years. I like the hunger and the edge and the toughness we played with in all three phases. Zach was great with his kickoffs and his placement. The one time Josh Plaster had a punt he smashed it coming out of the end zone for 50 yards.
“Really thrilled with the efficiency that we played with. I think we had five drives with 10-plus plays. Being able to move the ball. We had 10-plus explosive plays. We rushed the ball for some tough yards when we chose to do that. I know we didn’t have this amazing rushing total but I really liked our pad lean and I love how our guys blocked up front. We had one three-and-out on offense and forced six on defense. For the most part we were in really good position.
“Really pleased that we played a lot of guys, we played 87 players. The standard doesn’t change. I know sometimes that’s coach-speak but that’s when you walk in here feeling pretty good, being 1-0 and how we did it. That matters. We had 10 players, seven on defense and three on offense, that started their first game at Oklahoma. Proud of those guys. First career touchdowns for Tawee Walker and Jayden Gibson and Jackson Arnold and Kalib Hicks.

“I think Dillon and Jackson combined to go 30-for-33. Those guys did a great job. Kani Walker got in there and got his first strip. Jay teaches that every day. Sometimes those fundamentals show up and sometimes they don’t. That was good to see that. Largest margin of victory in an opener in 106 years. There’s been a lot of teams that have come through here. Nobody’s beating their chest, but to be able to come out here…
“You want to see discipline which we showed. See physicality and toughness and we saw that. The efficiency. Taking care of the football, we did that on offense. For the most part I thought our guys tackled really well. In great positioning for most of the day.”
