That win will carry for OU basketball, make no mistake about it. The Sooners have quality victories on their resume but earned a huge one to improve their position.

Beating BYU 82-66 on Tuesday calms down the fan base, at least for a few days. But now OU has two top-10 victories in the NET rankings.

The Cougars came in ranked No. 7 and are now No. 8. Iowa State is No. 9. OU, coming off the win, moved four spots to No. 27.

It was a night that was needed, and a night that was mission accomplished.

“We did. I think we’re all trying to stack wins,” head coach Porter Moser said. “Trying to go on one-game winning streaks in this league. You know that it’s opportunity. We lost a tough one. We had a good road win at Kansas State and turn around and don’t play well at Central Florida. Then turn around and play the No. 7 team in the NET.

“That’s opportunity. As daunting as this league is, there is opportunity. The opportunities are hard. But there is opportunity. I think our guys knew that. They knew it was a big win. They knew they had a great opportunity here at home.”

It was a banner night for the backcourt. Javian McCollum iced the game from the free throw line on his way to 20 points. And Milos Uzan simply controlled the game, its tempo and everything else. He filled the stat sheet with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and, a big one, zero turnovers.

“I mean we knew coming into this game this was a big game,” Uzan said. “It’s a Quad 1 game. So I feel like just all week focusing on the game plan, basically having our backs against the wall. We needed this. I think playing more aggressive as well knowing what type of coverage they were in, it was key for the win.”
