SoonerScoop Sights & Sounds: OU football back to work
Spring break over for OU football, time to get back to the grind. And here’s where we might get a chance to learn just a bit more about the Sooners.
Practice resumed Tuesday for head coach Brent Venables and company. Although Venables didn’t address the media, OU quarterback John Mateer did.
He knows his role, embracing it just fine.
“It’s been great,” Mateer said. “I mean, I’ve been trying to settle in since Jan. 13 when I got here, right? But everybody has brought me in and given me confidence and I’ve built relationships with these guys because they’re willing to bring me in. And then just bringing the offense in, it’s not easy. Like first day, everybody’s running around full speed. Everybody has adrenaline.
“(Practice) 2, 3, 4, 5 and now (practice) 6, now everybody’s having fun and playing full speed. We’d rather have them play full speed right now and make a mistake then go half speed and try to do it right. That’s something we’re still trying to do and then we’ll watch the film. That’s what the film’s for. But it’s been fun. We’ve all been doing a good job.”

No more breaks the rest of the way. OU will do all it can in the next three weeks to get it as much as it can out of spring.
Local media was also treated to another viewing session Tuesday afternoon. That means it’s time for the Sights & Sounds from SoonerScoop video editor Eddie Radosevich.
Mateer definitely getting familiar working against Venables.
“Intensity. He’s very smart,” Mateer said. “He knows exactly how it needs to be against every look, against every motion. He’s very smart. Sometimes he’ll stand like right next to me and I’m like, ‘Dude, I need some room.’ … He just like doesn’t even realize. He’s like, looking at the defense and I’m like, ‘Dude, come on.’ But it’s fun. I talk a little smack to him and he doesn’t even say it back. It’s fun.”
