It might be one of the most talked about days of the football calendar – it was depth chart today for OU on Tuesday.

Some things we learned. Some things remain a mystery. And some things might be this way for Week 1 and not as we head into Big 12 conference play.

SoonerScoop’s George Stoia and Eddie Radosevich broke it all down from the SoonerScoop Studios on Tuesday evening.

Walker gets the nod

Nothing opened more eyes than walk-on running back Tawee Walker being named a co-starter. All these elite backs recruited by the Sooners, and it’s the walk-on that bet on himself getting the honor.

“Um—yes and no,” said Walker about on if he was surprised. “I think I put in enough – I put in a lot of work, and I think my teammates and my coach got me to where I needed to be, to where I earned the spot, but yes, I was happy and surprised. It was a big moment for me, especially to tell my parents and my family that. They were very excited to hear that.”

The other co-starter is Marcus Major, now in his fifth year in Norman.

Is Gentry Williams the guy? Or the guy right now?

Sounds like finding that second cornerback starter will be an ongoing thing. First up will be Gentry Williams, tabbed as the guy in the depth chart.

With eight guys listed for the two cornerback spots, half of them haven’t played a snap for the Sooners. One guy who has seen Williams’ development, though, is No. 1 cornerback Woodi Washington.

“Just like you say he’s resilient. He’s got a lot of heart,” Washington said. “He went through some things and battled out and he’s at the top of the depth chart so he just keep fighting.

“Just seeing things before they happen. I mean whether it’s a formation or a play that he thinks is about to happen he’ll call it out before it happens. So just his football knowledge and knowing his job and the guys around him.”

Would you like an OR? Or maybe not?

The initial depth chart was littered with the dreaded ‘OR’ from head coach Brent Venables. It makes sense, but it’s always tough for fans to accept.

You want to keep the competition alive every day in practice. If you don’t like your spot in the chart, hey, go do something about it.

There were four ‘ORs’ for offense. OK, not too bad. There were a whopping 12 for defense and five on special teams.

Is this a good thing… or, there’s that word again, a concerning thing?

All that and more from Radosevich and Stoia, including a look at tight end and punter as the Scoop crew breaks down the depth chart.
