SoonerScoop video: The wait is over, John Mateer officially coming to OU
OU had to make a splash in the transfer portal in Week No. 2. It had to. Because if it didn’t, well, nobody wanted to consider the alternative.
Well, it’s overflowing in Norman right now. And the No. 1 priority is set to be a Sooner. Former Washington State quarterback John Mateer announced his commitment to OU on Wednesday evening.
Mateer had been ranked the No. 1 available player in the transfer portal by every recruiting service.
He was spectacular for the Cougars this season, totaling 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions through the air. He also ran for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns. That’s why he was widely considered the best quarterback in the portal this winter.
Mateer arrived in Norman late-late Tuesday night. And Wednesday was about sealing the deal for OU. It was up to OU head coach Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to get the job done. Maybe give an assist to wide receiver Deion Burks as well?
It might have felt like weeks and months, but OU can breathe again. Mateer is going to be a Sooner? So what’s it all mean?

They’ve been with you every step of the way, and they’re back. Time for SoonerScoop’s George Stoia and Eddie Radosevich to break it all down. And what Stoia is wondering…
*What kind of momentum will OU see across the board because Mateer is now in the fold? OU also earned commitments from two receivers Wednesday (JaVonnie Gibson, Keontez Lewis). Who is next because Mateer is now locked in?
*The numbers are impressive, very impressive from his time with the Cougars. How, though, will that translate to the SEC? Can Arbuckle and Mateer find that type of magic, that type of execution in going from Wazzu to the Sooners.
All that and a whole lot more from your SoonerScoop duo to talk about the storm finally breaking at OU. The quarterback question for 2025 has been answered.
