The pursuit is over for OU, and the pursuit did not end with the desired result. A few weeks of being hopeful, maybe even optimistic, but it took a turn in the last 48 hours.

OU was hoping to pull off the steal of the coaching cycle in getting Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to leave Columbus and head to Norman for the exact same position.

Things changed, though, when Penn State threw its hat in the ring earlier this week. And Knowles, the Philadelphia native, is heading home.

Despite the best efforts of OU, Knowles is joining James Franklin and the Nittany Lions.

Well, it’s time to break it down and talk all about it. They’ve been with you through all the good and bad, why not now? SoonerScoop’s Eddie Radosevich and George Stoia take a break from watch NFL conference Sunday to hop into the studios.

What now for OU?

Clearly, that becomes the biggest question. Even before you begin wondering who was at fault or how everything fell apart (if it did), the defensive coordinator spot is still there.

Where does OU go? The name du jour at the moment is Arkansas State defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling, who just joined the Red Wolves at the start of the month.

There is no doubt OU gave it everything it had to bring Knowles to Norman. The money, it sounds like, matched up. No issue there.

But it’s hard to argue with any OU fan right now. The program just lost one defensive coordinator in Zac Alley (West Virginia). And then it couldn’t land the biggest of the big fishes. The optics, perception, understandably, it’s not good.

A recap of everything OU and head coach Brent Venables tried to do to make it happen. And no matter what the explanation is going to be, it’s going to be tough for OU fans to digest this one.

All that and a lot more in this Instant Reaction video from SoonerScoop.
