Surprise, OU softball is No. 1 for first time in 2025

Everybody knew OU softball wasn’t going to be down long, if at all. The Sooners were going to reload as fast as possible.
But this quickly? Take a look at the polls. Following an incredibly impressive three-game sweep of Texas, OU is No. 1 in the Softball America poll for the first time this season.
The Sooners entered last week at No. 5 but made the statement of the softball season by scoring 23 runs against the third-ranked Longhorns in the victories.
This has been a joyous year for head coach Patty Gasso. But you know what? It might turn into a championship one as well.
“I can really let my hair down and be myself and joke with them and laugh with them,” said Gasso last week. “And I feel connected to some, sometimes more than others. Some others are just — their personalities are all quite different. But the learning curve is just, it’s just constant. It’s constant. And I just want them to walk off this field when it’s all said and done saying ‘I learned a ton, I gave it my all.’
“I know what Sooner fans are saying, what their expectations are. I just want to — I am so proud of what these guys have done thus far. And I don’t even know if I said it out loud to you all but never would I ever believe that we would be tied for second in the SEC with this team that we have.

“A new pitching staff and a completely new infield with the exception of Cydney Sanders, a broken down Ella Parker and, you know, Kasidi Pickering and Nelly leading us, a freshman captain. We have a freshman captain. That tells the whole story. So I’m just so proud of them and what they’ve continued to fight and trust our coaching staff.”
That was last week. The sweep now has OU as the No. 1 team in the SEC, with a full game lead over Texas A&M.
Nobody is putting the weight of expectations to win a fifth straight national championship, but this team is rounding into that form.
OU looks to clinch a regular season title with a three-game set at Florida, from Thursday-Saturday in Gainesville.
OU is now No. 3 in RPI, continuing to make the move in the right direction.
