OU football is almost here. And the SoonerScoop.com crew got a chance to catch up with coach Brent Venables, all the assistant coaches, and a handful of players Tuesday at local media day ahead of fall camp.

OU is looking to bounce back after a disappointing first season under Venables. But there’s a lot of hope and confidence around the program that the Sooners will get back on track in 2023.

“If you don’t embrace the expectations of a place like Oklahoma and the scrutiny that comes along with that, surprise, surprise,” Venables said Tuesday. “It’s no different. You’re out there for everybody. That’s OK. Respect is incredibly important. I have an appreciation for it. I’m glad the room’s full. Good. I want to meet those expectations, and a matter of fact, I want to exceed those expectations, and I want players that value that too. They get that.”

The phrase of the day — and the offseason — for OU was “competitive depth.” Venables and the coaching staff believe they’ve been able to revamp OU’s roster thanks to the transfer portal and the work they’ve done on the recruiting trail. For OU, that could be the difference in 2023.

“I really feel like we’ve gotten better through both the high school and the transfer portal,” Venables said. “The test of time will really tell. But we brought in guys that have experience that again brought leadership qualities that you can develop. It takes time but they have some natural intrinsic leadership ability.”

SoonerScoop’s Eddie Radosevich and George Stoia broke down these topics following media day. And laid out expectations not only for the team but also for individual players.
