What they said: OU players after 38-33 upset loss to Kansas
Unfamiliar territory for OU. For the first time this season, the Sooners tasted defeat after the 38-33 setback at Kansas on Saturday.
The loss puts Brent Venables’ bunch at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in a tight Big 12 race.
SoonerScoop was out in full force to listen to what the players had to say following the disappointing performance.
Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby
What happened after Downs’ interception?
“We wanted to make sure they used all three (timeouts) but we were trying like heck to get a first down. We felt like running the ball and having the ability to pin them there without any timeouts, making them go the length was the right thing to do. That’s why I ran it there on third down. Gotta execute better. Got a chance to win the game if we stay on the field and get one first down, but we don’t do it.”
QB Dillon Gabriel
How disappointing was the performance?
“Just didn’t get in a rhythm and ended up losing the game So that’s what happened. Everything on film is on film. So that’s what it is.”
RB Tawee Walker
Tough to not be out there for fourth quarter?
“Man, of course I wanted to be out there. But Jovantae (Barnes) went in there and he did his thing. We just couldn’t get the result we wanted.”

C Andrew Raym
Why the offensive inconsistency?
“It’s got to be a lack of details. I mean there’s no other answer. Whenever things don’t work out it’s just got to be us not doing what we need to do.”
DE Ethan Downs
Overall thoughts?
“It came down to the end there. Trying to capitalize and make the right play. Whether that be calling timeouts at the right time, executing your job, playing your 1/11th. If I don’t set the edge, quarterback is out the pocket and gone. If I miss the sack, you know. Just missing your opportunities. That’s what it comes down to in those situations. Capitalizing on the moment.”
DT Jonah Laulu
The mood and message in the locker room afterward?
“That we just gotta pick it up. This is a really humbling experience for us. We just gotta come to every game, every practice and start off fast. We can’t start slow and we can’t be shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and not having the right amount of people on the field when we need to have 11 people on the field.”
