The OU defense came up huge in the 20-6 win at Cincinnati. A lot of the postgame talk was with the defensive stars.

The SoonerScoop crew was out in full force to talk with all the players as Brent Venables and the Sooners are now 4-0.

QB Dillon Gabriel

Overall feeling?

“A win is a win, so I don’t want to complain about that. I think there’s things we can get better at. But at the same time, finding ways to win in games where there might be a struggle or adversity, that’s important. And then seeing us complement each other as well. The defense played their butt off. I want to emphasize that. They played unreal. They get three fourth-down stops, even ending in a pick for one. And the game was close, so those were important.”

OT Walter Rouse

Learn something about the team?

“Just that we’ve had two games where I feel like it’s similar, with this and SMU, and despite the 10-6 going into the half, then coming out and having those big plays—this team is resilient. I know I wasn’t here last year, but I just know this team, we’re just different all around. The way Coach Bedenbaugh is talking, our defense is different, our offense is going; we’re different from last year. Started 3-0 last year, and now we’re 4-0. Like Coach V says, we’re 1-0 every single week. The camaraderie of this team, like this team is my family. We love everyone.”

LB Danny Stutsman

Defensive confidence?

“Defense wins championships. That’s been a big emphasis for us with Coach V coming in. We want to be the reason. The defense. We want to be the why, not the but. That’s going to be the emphasis for us, for sure.”

Cheetah LB Dasan McCullough

Full game at Cheetah?

“I ended up getting comfortable. I started to feel comfortable I would say through all these reps at practice and the spring and the spring game. I kind of was a little comfortable with it. Obviously in the game, especially the Big 12 opener, it’s a little bit of a bigger stage. But it felt good though. I felt like I was made for that. So I can’t wait to keep going on. Especially going back home next week with Iowa State is gonna be huge.”

S Billy Bowman

How much has the secondary improved?

“What gives us extreme confidence, the guys in front of us and how much we’re playing together right now. D-line helps the linebackers, linebackers help us, we help the D-line get home. Linebackers help the D-line. Like I said, we’re playing complementary football, so I feel like, as a whole, we all know what we’re doing and we’re confident in that. It allows us to play more freely.”

S Key Lawrence

4-0 this year is officially different?

“We didn’t forget nothing. We know everything that’s coming. We know nothing’s going to be handed to us. Winning is not easy because everyone would be undefeated if that was the case. So we’ve just got to understand we’re hungry. We know what we want to do. We know what we gotta do to get there and we’re going to keep our head down and keep working.”
