Leading up to No. 20 Ole Miss making its first road trip of the season the biggest topic of interest is still the status of the quarterback battle.

Though all is still quiet on that front, at least to the outside world, as Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin continues to double down on stating either Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart could be named the starter at Georgia Tech (1-1) this weekend.

During his weekly appearance on the SEC Coaches Teleconference Kiffin was immediately hit with the quarterback question and if a QB1 has been named or not.

Of course the answer was the same one it has been since the start of fall camp.

“We’ve not made that decision,” Kiffin said. “Both guys continue to battle and done some good things. Some things they need to do better. Both still young, second year of college. We hope to improve this week.”

The only issue is that Altmyer came out of the Ole Miss’ game last weekend late in the first half after seeming to suffer an injury.

Altmyer’s injury was described by an Ole Miss spokesman during the game as something in the upper body region. The spokesman also said he would need further evaluation.

In the one open practice day for Media viewing this week, Altmyer was extremely limited in the drills. It would lead one to think Dart will get the nod to start for Ole Miss (2-0).

Still, Kiffin stuck to his guns.

“I think he’s fine,” Kiffin said of Altmyer’s injury. “He understands the competition is still wide open so I expect both guys playing.”

Ole Miss wraps up its non-conference schedule in the next two weeks with the Yellowjackets on Saturday followed by Tulsa at home on Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. CT.

From there is a stretch of eight straight Southeastern Conference games in nine weeks to conclude the regular season.

While Kiffin is keeping to the idea of using two quarterbacks for now, he did hint a very vague timeframe for when a decision could be made.

“I wouldn’t anticipate that being long term,” Kiffin said. “It’s not ideal. Try to make the most of it that’s positive. There’s still a competition going on but that is not our long term plan.”
