The final month of the college basketball season is inching closer and for the Ole Miss men’s basketball team is also closing on on a potential return to the NCAA Tournament in March.

January has been a good month for the No. 16-ranked Rebels (15-4, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) but back-to-back conference losses sting a little. Despite the last-second loss to No. 13 Texas A&M on Wednesday the postseason projections did not take too bad of a hit for Ole Miss.

In Friday’s latest ‘Bracketology’ update from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi he bumped the Rebels back down to a 5 Seed, putting them in the West Region (San Francisco).

The newest Field of 68 projection has Ole Miss playing 12 Seed George Mason in Providence, Rhode Island in the first round. If the Rebels won they would advance to play the winner between 4 Seed Illinois and 13 Seed Yale for the chance to get back to the Sweet 16.

Ole Miss is one of 13 SEC teams in the mix of Lunardi’s latest bracket prediction. No. 1 Auburn is the overall 1 Seed while Alabama also claims a 1 Seed. The other nine SEC teams in the field are Florida (2 Seed), Tennessee (2), Kentucky (3), Texas A&M (4), Mississippi State (5), Missouri (7), Georgia (9), Oklahoma (10) and Vanderbilt (10).

Texas is an 11 Seed but one of the Last Four In and slotted in one of the First Four games against Central Florida.

The Aggies got a bump up after their win over Ole Miss on Wednesday. The Rebels can bounce back with a win at No. 22 Missouri on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT before hosting Texas next Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT.

College basketball pundit Jon Rothstein listed out his top seed teams on Friday, putting the Rebels as a 4 Seed and one of 12 SEC teams to make the field.

Ole Miss women stay steady in latest ‘Bracketology’ update

A pair of wins last week, ending with the victory over Mississippi State on Sunday was followed by a bye week for the Rebels.

With the turnaround in conference play Ole Miss (13-5, 4-2) remained as a 6 Seed of Region 3 Birmingham in Charlie Creme’s newest update on Friday for ESPN. Creme placed it in the College Park bracket and would play the winner of the First Four game between Iowa State or Iowa as the 11 Seed.

A potential second round matchup would be against the winner between host team and 3 Seed Maryland and 14 Seed Norfolk State.

The Rebels return to action on Sunday when they host No. 7 Texas (19-2, 5-1) at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN. The Longhorns are currently projected as a 2 Seed by Creme.
