The past week has been good for the Ole Miss basketball program and both teams continue on a path to make history next month.
The men’s team is coming off a 2-0 week with a win over then No. 14 Kentucky last Tuesday then rallying to escape Baton Rouge with a two-point victory over LSU in the final seconds.
Avoiding disaster worked in the favor of No. 19 Ole Miss (18-6, 7-4 Southeastern Conference) as it did not suffer what would be a bad loss to a lower SEC team on the road. With that in mind the latest ‘Bracketology’ updates have the Rebels still in the 4 to 5 Seed range.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has Ole Miss still a 5 Seed in the West Region (San Francisco) in Tuesday’s update, which is where he bumped them up to last Friday following the win over the Wildcats. The Rebels would play 12 Seed McNeese State in Providence, Rhode Island in the first round. A potential second round meeting would be against either 4 Seed Wisconsion or 13 Seed Akron.
On Monday Jerry Palm of CBS Sports had Ole Miss listed as the 4 Seed also in the West Region. Palm has the Rebels starting in Seattle against 13 Seed High Point. Also in the four-team bracket is 5 Seed Kansas and 12 Seed Yale.
In the latest NET rankings update the Rebels are No. 22 with a current Quad 1 record of 5-6. ESPN’s Basketball Power Index (BPI) currently gives them a near 56 percent chance to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ole Miss women’s team still fighting for a host seed
Monday night’s 66-57 win over No. 8 Kentucky was the first home win over a Top 10 opponent in the Yolett McPhee-McCuin era at Ole Miss.

After dropping last Thursday’s game against a Top 15 Oklahoma with yet another fourth-quarter collapse, things were different this time around and the Rebels got a major résumé-boosting victory.
ESPN’s Charlie Creme stated before the game that the Rebels (16-7, 7-4 SEC) and Wildcats (19-3, 8-2) were in a battle for one of the overall Top 16 seeds for next month’s NCAA Tournament. That means Ole Miss is still in the hunt for a host seed.
Despite Creme’s comments and the win he still put the Rebels as a 5 Seed and Kentucky as a 4 Seed in Tuesday’s update. Ole Miss is projected to be in the Region 4 Spokane bracket and start in Raleigh, North Carolina against 12 Seed Fairfield, joining host team and 4 Seed North Carolina State and 13 Seed Florida Gulf Coast.
The Rebels are right at the doorstep, though, of getting a 4 Seed and having a chance of hosting the first two rounds at the SJB Pavilion in March. Ole Miss could host NCAA Tournament games in Oxford for the first time since 1994 if they are able to move into one of those host seed positions.
