For all of the missteps and dropped Southeastern Conference series the last few weekends Ole Miss still is just on the outside looking in of hosting a regional in the NCAA Tournament.

Last weekend’s result in Starkville put the Rebels further away from the door and might have been the permanent damage to keep postseason baseball from coming to Oxford for another year. Though the latest tournament projections still provide that slight glimmer of hope.

Both D1Baseball and Baseball America have Ole Miss (35-17, 14-13 SEC) as a 2 Seed. They Rebels are also still projected to be heading to the Carolinas by each outlet.

Ole Miss is projected to be the 2 Seed in the Chapel Hill Regional by D1Baseball, joining No. 8 National Seed North Carolina. Iowa (3 Seed) and Central Connecticut (4 Seed) round out the four-team regional which is paired with the Eugene Regional and No. 9 National Seed Oregon.

Baseball America sees things a little differently, putting the Rebels as the 2 Seed in the Clemson Regional with the No. 14 National Seed Tigers. Kansas (3 Seed) and Rhode Island (4 Seed) rounds out the regional. The potential Super Regional match up is intriguing and much closer to home being paired with the Auburn Regional and No. 3 National Seed Tigers.

Of course that could all change after this weekend due to Ole Miss and No. 6 Auburn (37-15, 16-11) meeting in Oxford for the final SEC series of the regular season.

This three-game set, starting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT, will determine a lot for the Rebels win or lose. Winning the series could go a long way in a hosting argument and of course dropping a third straight SEC series will just send Ole Miss potentially tumbling down the seeding chart.

“Do I think this pushed Ole Miss out of the hosting picture? Plainly, yes I do. But I think they’re not too far from the line,” Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner said on this week’s Rebel Yell Hotline. “A strong close to the season, a good showing in Hoover, maybe Ole Miss can push its way back in. Some other results in the country would probably be really helpful for that as well. …Out right now of the hosting picture; the world has not ended, though.”

On3’s Jonathan Wagner also has the Rebels heading to South Carolina and the Clemson Regional. Northeast (3 Seed) and High Point (4 Seed) rounds out Wagner’s projections. The regional is paired with the Tallahassee Regional, setting up a potential Super Regional match up with No. 3 Florida State.
