From the Wire: Chiara Tamburlini set to represent Ole Miss women’s golf at NCAA Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Ole Miss junior Chiara Tamburlini will conclude her 2021-22 season with the 2022 NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona, with Tamburlini set to play May 20-23.

A total of 132 golfers will compete at Grayhawk Golf Club, with 24 total teams in attendance as well as 12 individual golfers from schools who did not qualify for the team championship portion of the weekend.

Players will first compete in three 18-hole rounds of stroke play competition Friday through Sunday. Following the third round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on an advancing team for Monday. 

Monday’s fourth round of stroke play will take place, at which point the individual national champion will be crowned.

GOLF Channel will provide live coverage of Monday’s fourth and final round of the individual stroke play national championship.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Friday, May 20 – 18 holes (Tamburlini to tee off 3:20 p.m. CT)
Saturday, May 21 – 18 holes (Tamburlini to tee off 10:20 a.m. CT)
Sunday, May 22 – 18 holes (Tamburlini to tee off 10:20-10:31 a.m. CT)
*Monday, May 23 – 18 holes (Tamburlini to tee off 2:01-2:23 p.m. CT)

* Tamburlini must be in the top nine individuals on non-advancing teams after round three to compete in Monday’s fourth round

TAMBURLINI IN 2021-22

The 2021-22 season has proven to be a prosperous one for the St. Gallen, Switzerland, native. Tamburlini has posted team-best marks for the Rebels in season stroke average (72.62), top 5 (3), top 10 (6) and top 20 (10) finishes on the year. She enters Scottsdale having earned a top 20 individual finish in every tournament appearance of the season for Ole Miss. Tamburlini ultimately garnered the first All-SEC honor of her collegiate career at the conclusion of her epic comeback at the Tallahassee Regional, being voted first team All-SEC by the conference’s coaches.

— Team-best 72.62 stroke average in 2021-22 (third-lowest in program history)
— 73.12 career stroke average for the Rebels (currently ranks second in program history)

TAMBURLINI IN THE TALLAHASSEE REGIONAL

Despite a slow start from Tamburlini at the Tallahassee Regional, logging rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5) in the opening two days of play, Tamburlini would put together the round of her life on day three to launch herself into the final individual qualifying spot. With three holes left to play, Tamburlini would sink clutch putt after clutch putt to earn two birdies as well as a 21-footer for par, capturing her place at the 2022 NCAAs. Tamburlini’s third round included six total birdies enroute to her earning a new career-low 18-hole score of 66 (-6) to jump from 30th to sixth on her final day in Tallahassee.

TAMBURLINI’S LAST TIME OUT IN SCOTTSDALE

The 2021 NCAA Championship saw Tamburlini finish tied for 15th overall at the conclusion of the stroke play individual championship, with Tamburlini carding rounds of 69 (-3) and 72 (E) to cap off the stroke play portion of the weekend. Tamburlini’s attention would then shift to the match play portion of the week, where she would ultimately finish with a record of 1-2, winning her championship matchup against Oklahoma State to help the Rebels earn the 2021 NCAA National Championship.

REBELS IN THE POLLS

Tamburlini enters her final event of the season ranked No. 17 in the country according to Golfstat. She also holds the No. 21 spot in the country in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin NCAA Individual Rankings. Tamburlini also continues to climb in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) by the USGA, as she has now risen to the No. 84 position in the world, the highest of any Swiss amateur, male or female.
