College Football Playoffs: Ole Miss still has life with latest Top 25 rankings
Saturday afternoon felt like the end of the road for Ole Miss. An upset loss at Florida felt like it was time to write the end of the season wrap up and get ready for some bowl game either back in the Sunshine State or elsewhere.
But then the chaos happened that afternoon and night and somehow the Rebels still had a pulse after the bloodbath.
Tuesday’s latest College Football Playoffs Top 25 rankings provided more proof that there is still life for Ole Miss and a chance to get into the 12-team field.
But more chaos and help is needed this weekend and next Saturday in the conference championships.
Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) dropped five spots to No. 14 in this week’s rankings but still on the doorstep of the CFP bracket. Alabama who lost convincingly at Oklahoma — a team the Rebels beat
Being one of a handful of three-loss teams, including Crimson Tide and No. 15 South Carolina, this weekend is vital to its hopes. The Rebels 24-point win over the Gamecocks in Columbia is the difference there.
With the way the bracket shakes out with the five conference champions taking spots, the Rebels are the third team out behind No. 12 Clemson and Alabama.

A convincing win over Mississippi State is what is needed from the Rebels. Not just eking out a usual close Egg Bowl win will cut it. Style points are what is required and a beat down of the worst team in the SEC is what is required.
Then there are some key matchups this weekend that could also help the Rebels out. A Texas win over Texas A&M would give the Aggies their third loss and push them out of the race after its overtime loss to Auburn last week.
A Vanderbilt win over Tennessee this weekend could also go a long way in aiding Ole Miss, but that will be a tough task for the Commodores in Nashville on Saturday morning.
The South Carolina – Clemson outcome will help Ole Miss no matter who wins with both sitting so close to the Top 12. Though the Gamecocks suffering its fourth loss would help if the discussion by the CFP committee becomes a three-loss SEC team finding its way into the field.
