Fans stop to take photos with the College Football National Championship trophy at Meijer in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024. The trophy is going on a tour for fans to see presented by Dr. Pepper.

Tuesday really sets the stage for if Ole Miss should pay attention to Saturday’s conference championships or not when the College Football Playoffs release its second to last set of rankings.

The Top 25 released will be the final one before this week’s slate of championship games then Sunday will see the first 12-team CFP field revealed. Either Ole Miss is in it or it will be waiting until later that day to see what non-CFP bowl it will be going to.

For the Rebels the argument is against Southeastern Conference foes Alabama and South Carolina, the latter of which has surged the final half of the season and become the trendy team to discuss.

Similar to Ole Miss prior to the Gainesville debacle.

But the CFP committee will levy its verdict on Tuesday and from there the road maps is clear. So where might, or should, the Rebels be slotted in the rankings?

Take out the Associated Press and Coaches Poll ranking of 15, which seems too low for what Ole Miss did to close out the year with an Egg Bowl win and other results this past weekend.

The Rebels should be between 12-14 in my humble opinion. Though this positioning would have them as one of, if not the, first teams out of the playoffs.

Ole Miss should for sure be ahead of South Carolina.

Lane Kiffin agrees with that sentiment. He has been campaigning hard to the CFP committee to start the week.

Though Kiffin has a reason as the Rebels résumé stacks up well against the Crimson Tide and Gamecocks. Ole Miss ran South Caroline out of its own stadium with a 24-point win, in Kiffin’s own words.

Alabama is one that could still stay ahead of the Rebels, though, as they were in last week’s rankings and both teams won their rivalry games to close out the regular season.
