Ole Miss football — from the team itself, down to the fans — entered Saturday’s showdown with LSU with something to prove.

Message received.

The No. 20-ranked Rebels put the rest of the SEC West on notice, as the largest crowd in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium history (66,703) paid witness to a thrilling 55-49 win over the No. 13 Tigers.

“Extremely proud of our players,” Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said afterwards. “We’re just really proud of these guys for overcoming adversity in the game and the week. They took a lot of heat this week for the performance last week in Alabama. That’s good. Standards have changed around here. You’re supposed to beat Alabama, and they took a lot of heat, especially offensively.

“Really went back to work and ran the ball really well today. I don’t know how many times you have 700 yards of offense without turning the ball over or having a sack. It’s pretty amazing by the assistant coaches and the players, too, because they made the plays, and they made a lot of them today.”

Ole Miss (4-1, 1-1 SEC) scored its most points ever against an AP ranked opponent.

The teams’ combined point total (104) is the third-highest ever produced in SEC history between league foes. The combined yards of total offense (1,343) are the fifth-most in the SEC all-time . They’re also the most in the conference since 2020.

Ole Miss’ 706 yards of total offense are its sixth-most ever. Kiffin’s teams are responsible for four of the six 700-yard games the Rebels have produced in their history. LSU (3-2, 2-1 SEC) had 637 total yards. Quarterback Jayden Daniels put up 513 yards of total offense and five touchdowns. However, his potential game-winner, a 26-yard pass, was broken up by Rebel safety Daijahn Anthony as time expired.
