The weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference took place on Wednesday and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin once again fielded the usual questions from the media.

Tulsa (2-1) makes its way to Oxford to wrap up the non-conference portion of the No. 16 Rebels (3-0) schedule on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

For the first time this season Kiffin was not asked an update on the quarterback situation, which he has not changed his answer on. Though he was asked about the improving Ole Miss defense.

Here is everything else Kiffin said on the call.

OPENING STATEMENT

Lane Kiffin: “We got a big challenge ahead of us coming back home. We’re hoping for the home crowd to show up. We need home-field advantage especially with the No. 1 passing offense in the country coming in. That would be really great if that happened and we’ve got to play really well. This is a team that over the years has upset some big teams and taken really good teams to the wire. Very well coached and very complicated schemes.”

When Quinshon Judkins arrived on campus and was practice did you foresee he would contribute this much so far?

Lane Kiffin: “We had an idea he was going to be really good having been to the state championship game and watched him in person. But you never know for sure and he has been unbelievable. The way he makes the first person miss and unique toughness of someone that age. He’s going to be really special.”

What did you like in Chris Partridge to lead to your decision to bring him to Ole Miss?

Lane Kiffin: “We hired him when we first got here as a co-defensive coordinator. We knew he was a great recruiter and really good defensive coach. He’s really grown on the schematic side of things with coach (D.J.) Durkin. I needed some people to take over and he’s done a great job.”

With Tulsa having the top passing offense in the country has anything change in focus with practice this week?

Lane Kiffin: “It’s a big challenge. Now if you look at Troy, statistically, they’re up there in the country in passing, too. We’ve had some challenges but this is by far the biggest challenge. They’re really well-coached. A lot of veteran players who have been doing it for a long time. So, we’re going to have to play really good and hopefully our crowd shows up.”

Was becoming an offense-minded coach a form of rebellion to your dad (Monte Kiffin) instead of focusing on coaching defense? *A tongue-in-cheek question*

Lane Kiffin: “That naturally happens sometimes by what you play. When you’re younger, playing quarterback. You’re in college and you’re listening to all the coaches for that whole time. So that kind of led me to that direction. But the background of being around (my dad) and being with Pete Carroll and Nick Saban as head coaches really allowed me to learn a lot.”

How important is your dad to the program right now?

Lane Kiffin: “It’s awesome having him around. Players really enjoy him and he really takes a lot of time with the younger coaches and helping them. Mentors them.”
