From the Wire: Suber leads the way for Ole Miss men's golf on day one of SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – In the opening round of play at the SEC Championship, men’s golf fought through 20 mph wind to total a team score of 294 (+14) on the day to sit in 14th entering Thursday’s second round.
Only the top eight finishing teams will qualify for the match play portion of the tournament on Saturday, with seeding reflecting the top eight standings at the conclusion of Friday’s final round of stroke play.
“Our group is certainly disappointed in how we came out of the gates today,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We did a poor job of staying disciplined and let the wind get to us. Unfortunately we picked a bad time to have our worst round of the year. However, we aren’t even halfway through the stroke play portion of this tournament and we have two more days to get back into this thing. We won’t let one bad day deter us.”
Jackson Suber saw the best opening round for the Rebels at Sea Island, finishing day one with a 69 (-1) for a tie for 13th heading into day two. Despite a slow start opening his tournament at two-over through his front nine, four birdies across his back nine propelled the fourth-year standout up into the top 20. Suber tallied half of the squad’s eight birdies on day one.
Underclassmen Kye Meeks and Brett Schell both contributed to the Rebels’ total on the day with Meeks logging a 74 (+4) and Schell recording a 75 (+5) to open their tournaments. Each found success early-on in their rounds, with Meeks finishing his front nine one-over, while Schell’s front nine went for par. The duo will enter day two with Meeks tied for 48th and Schell tied for 57th overall.
Sarut Vongchaisit and Evan Brown rounded out the lineup for Ole Miss with scores of 76 (+6) and 79 (+9), respectively. Both Vongchaisit and Brown each tallied one birdie apiece on the day.
Leading the way on the team leaderboard at the end of day one is Vanderbilt, with the team shooting a blazing 273 (-7) to open their tournament.
The Rebels will be right back in action on Thursday for round two of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. Tee times for Ole Miss are set to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT on Hole 10.
